Even though the Gmail story starts in 2004, the story with @googlemail.com starts exactly like this : “On July 4, 2020 Google Corporation announced that Gmail Germany would change as Google Mail. The domain gmail.com became unavailable in Germany due to trademark disputes, in which cases users must use the domain googlemail.com. From that point forward, visitors originating from an IP address determined to be in Germany would be forwarded to googlemail.com where they could obtain an email address containing the new domain as stated in Wikipedia . Another dispute was started in 2005  in England with the UK company IIIR  also for Trademark issues going back to @gmail just in 2005.

Today we explain here how you can use @googlemail.com address. In fact if you own a gmail.com email address you can use @googlemail.com extension as the recipient address instead of the same @gmail.com, so all the people can also write to you using [email protected] and of course it would be received at [email protected]  You can treat all the email messages that arrive to @googlemail.com in a special named folder.

New @gmail.com Logo today in 2017

So basically as someone stated in the Google product forums: No difference now between googlemail.com and gmail.com.  You can use either and if your name is x…@gmail.com, people can also send mail to x…@googlemail.com.

The main difference would be the spelling.

A good example for the use of yourname@googlemail.com could be to give it only to a select group of people and make it arrive to a special folder.

So what are you waiting for? You can tell your friends too to use @googlemail.com to receive emails.

Today Gmail is web based email that’s intuitive, efficient, and useful. 15 GB of storage, less spam, and mobile access gives almost unbeatable advantages.
